SlideShares Replace the College Admissions Essay

BlogEntry_internal2We like to think of SlideShares as a new form of visual content — a different, and increasingly important, way to tell a story or get a message across. And we love seeing the creative ways companies and individuals are embracing this new content type, from how-to guides and visual essays to thought leadership pieces and statistical reports. Now SlideShares are being used as an alternative to MBA admissions essays.

The University of Iowa’s Tippie School of Management has recently announced they will accept a SlideShare presentation in place of two admissions essays. Applicants must answer the question “Why should we invest in you?” in a SlideShare presentation. What’s more, the author of the SlideShare the school deems the most creative will get a full-tuition financial reward, and the ¬†SlideShare that garners the most number of “likes” will get a $5,000 scholarship.

“We just felt like essays were getting kind of stale, and we wanted something that was current and in a place where our applicants would want to be found,” Jodi Schafer, the director of admissions for Tippie’s full-time MBA program, told CNNMoney.

The school will upload the submissions to its SlideShare channel for public viewing¬†July 17. People will then have one week to “like” the presentations they think should win the scholarship. We can’t wait to see the results!

Whats up this is kinda of off topic but I was wanting to know if blogs use WYSIWYG editors or if you have to manually code with HTML.
I’m starting a blog soon but have no coding experience so I wanted to get advice from someone with experience. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

At Kira Talent we believe almost all change is good. Adding creativity and self-expression to the application process with new mediums is a great idea. It’s one of the reason we love how our academic clients (Major NA MBA and University programs) are infusing video interviews into the recruitment process. A Slideshare is great, but you could (technically) get someone to do it for you. An time-bound, asynchronous video interview cannot be faked and, we believe, is the ultimate demonstration of your personality, potential, and communication skills required for every program and every job.
