Happy Birthday SlideShare!!!

Oct 5, 03:30 am PST

SlideShare turned one today. We launched on the night of Oct 4-5 (PST) in 2006 and what a year it has been? What started out as a resolve to build a simple webapp for sharing our own presentation slides from conferences, barcamps etc has metamorphosed into what is unarguably the world’s largest online community for sharing presentations on the web. We soon discovered that the presentation use case was just the tip of the iceberg; all kinds of people started using slideshare- teachers, corporates, professionals, consultants, librarians, designers, jokers, pranksters, artists, bloggers, marketers, advertisers, investors, photographers, painters, students, podcasters, conference organisers & speakers, gardeners, priests, soldiers et al (I could go on & on…). Our traffic numbers are consistently rising and we just crossed 3 million unique monthly visitors mark in September.

In line with what has now become a web tradition, we have temporarily tweaked the slideshare logo to mark the anniversary. Tell us what you think of the change!

On behalf of the SlideShare team, I’d like to thank all our users for taking SlideShare to this level. We’ve heard from lots of people that SlideShare’s community is unique…very few social webapps have this kind of a user base. We are REALLY proud of our community.

To commemorate the first anniversary, we decided to dig deeper into our database and identify some of our most active/popular users during the first year. A special word of thanks to these users, who have contributed so much to slideshare.

User with the most comments on slideshare:
spiderweb99
User with the most uploaded slideshows: MegaaMiga
User with maximum featured slideshows on the homepage: meisterjoker
User with the most slidecasts till now: MegaaMiga
User who has been added as a contact by maximum no of people: darmano
User with most overall views for his/her slideshows: javiteran, jbrenman, rado_fun (this was a close tie between all three)

Going forward into our second year, we hope to make slideshare more relevant to your working lives. There are at least three major releases that we have planned in the coming year that should help us achieve that. One of those is actually more than just a release, it has the potential to make slideshare 3X more useful. But you’ll have to wait for that…just a little bit…

Thanks a lot once again and happy slidesharing!

Here’s a bunch of snaps from the anniversary celebration at out Delhi office..

Thank you guys for doing a great job for us - users. Thanks to Slideshare all our barcamp meetings get this extra added value - presentations online for those that couldn’t attend meetings.

Happy Birthday Slideshare :):):) I want to tell you that the team at slideshare is the best ever. The guys from New Delhi are just great. They are so friendly, kind and polite. I Like the way Amit gets just a little involved with the members. I hope as Slideshare gets bigger, and it sure will, that will not change.
Dr. Rashmi Sinha, I like her group she started on cats. Just these little things you guys do make the members feel that they know you some what and that’s important.
Jonathan Boutelle, He’s cool. I’ve read some of his comments on member presentations. He’s very intellectual. I thank him for having the idea for Slideshare.
Every month you give us something new on Slideshare and I want to say your hard work is appreciated and enjoyed.
Last spring I completely sever my ACL in my right knee while skying. So I was laid up for some time. During that time I found Slideshare. At first I just enjoyed looking at everyone’s presentations and I just had to comment!!! They had taken the time to put them together for people to view, I was sure they would like some feedback as to what people thought of their presentations.
Once again Happy Birthday and THANK YOU ALL so much :):):)

I’m joining the party a little late.
Many Happy Returns of the Day. Incidentally Oct 5 happens to be the birthdate of a friend of mine and I had uploaded a slide-show (yes, just one slide) carrying a great quote from Mother Teresa. The quote fits the Slideshare team very aptly indeed!

The reason why I missed the B-day party is not the usual ‘I was busy’, ‘out of office’, ‘on vacation’ etc. kind of reasons. In the month I discovered Slideshare, I was spending so much time on it that my schedules were getting disturbed. Actually, I must file a suit claiming damages from you guys for botching up my schedule! LOL!!! The site is so addictive.

Perhaps Amit (Ranjan) should add a by line to the site - ’site is addictive. Visitors to enter the site at their own risk’ [cf. 'Vehicles aprked at owners risk' notices that greet visitors/customers in front of many shops and establishments in India]

I have been able to make some new good friends (not something I came into it for though). This includes ’spiderweb99′ whose name I am glad to see listed amongst the most active users.

I have been able to share her tender slideshow on ‘Polar-Bears’ with several of my friends in India and the US and I keep getting repeated requests on the source. If this turns out to spread more awareness on the impact global warming is having on many life forms the Polar-Bears, spiderweb99 AND slideshare promoters should take the credit for it.

Slideshare has been fun, useful and profound.
Keep up the good work Amit, John, Rashmi and the rest of the team.

    Happy (belated) birthday again.

    Cheers
    SRINI
